A newly upgraded Anisakan Airport was opened in Pyin Oo Lwin on Saturday, with the attendance of President U Min Aung Hlaing. After formal opening of the ceremony, the President unveiled the signboard of the new airport building. He stressed that the upgraded facility will support smoother travel for visitors to Pyin Oo Lwin and contribute to the development of the region. He said Anisakan Airport will strengthen Myanmar’s domestic aviation network and serve as an important transport link for Pyin Oo Lwin and surrounding areas. The President also highlighted the airport’s potential to support tourism, agricultural exports, and investment by improving transport links to the region. He also outlined further development plans which include expanding facilities for larger aircraft, cargo operations, and additional infrastructure to enhance the airport’s future capacity. This was followed by the presentation on the salient points of the new facility, screening of a documentary video clip on the upgrading works, and performance program. The Anisakan Airport, which has a long history dating back before Myanmar’s independence, was previously used for domestic flights. Its runway was extended in 2004 and completed in 2006, allowing safer aircraft operations. The latest upgrade project began in 2023 and included the construction of a new two-storey terminal building with a capacity of 100,000 passengers annually, an expanded aircraft parking area, a new air traffic control tower, runway lighting systems, and aircraft landing guidance equipment. The upgraded airport can accommodate three aircraft, including Boeing 737-800 aircraft, at the same time. Further expansion plans include facilities for larger aircraft, cargo handling areas, and additional infrastructure to develop the airport into a modern regional aviation hub.
