USS Abraham Lincoln to Visit Thailand After 14 Years

The USS Abraham Lincoln, a US Navy nuclear-powered aircraft carrier, is scheduled to return to Laem Chabang Port in Chonburi Province from September 2–6, 2026. This marks the carrier's third visit to Thailand and its first return in over a decade. The USS Abraham Lincoln (CVN-72) previously visited Laem Chabang in 2006 and 2012. Its first visit was from April 20–24, 2006, accompanied by three other US Navy vessels — USS Mobile Bay, USS Russell and USS Shoup. The carrier returned from January 6–10, 2012, accompanied by the USS Cape St. George. For the 2026 visit, the USS Abraham Lincoln is expected to arrive with three accompanying vessels and approximately 5,000 personnel. The visit aims to provide rest and recuperation for the crew, as well as allow the ships to receive logistical support. For Chonburi and Pattaya, however, the significance of the visit extends beyond the presence of a major US Navy aircraft carrier. Thousands of US personnel are expected to spend permitted time ashore, providing a welcome boost for local restaurants, hotels, shops, transport operators and tourism businesses. The visit also provides a striking comparison between two eras. When the USS Abraham Lincoln first arrived in 2006, Laem Chabang was already Thailand’s major commercial deep-sea port. Since then, the port and surrounding Eastern Seaboard have undergone major development, with Laem Chabang becoming a key infrastructure hub supporting Thailand’s Eastern Economic Corridor and an increasingly important regional logistics centre. The return of the same aircraft carrier therefore offers a unique snapshot of that transformation. The ship that visited Laem Chabang two decades ago is returning to a port that has grown considerably in scale and importance. Beyond the naval visit itself, the latest arrival reflects the long-standing relationship between Thailand and the United States, as well as the dramatic transformation of Chonburi’s eastern seaboard.
