China agrees to complete Myitsone Dam project in 8.5 years, Kachin Chief Minister says no need to fear earthquakes due to advanced technology
The Myitsone Dam project in northern Myanmar is expected to be completed in 8.5 years, with an agreement reached with China, according to Kachin State Chief Minister Kha Htein Nan. Kha Htein Nan made these remarks to members of the Union Solidarity and Development Party when he visited the site to inspect the opening of the Myitkyina-Mogaung railway section on June 23. He stated that Myanmar is a country suffering from severe electricity shortages, and a country struggling to charge mobile phones cannot develop. He explained that the Myitsone Dam project will be constructed using the latest technology and will be able to withstand earthquakes up to Magnitude 8. He added that if there is heavy rainfall in Putao Township, upstream of Myitkyina, water will be released in advance, and the Myitsone Dam will be monitored 24 hours a day via satellite, so there is no need to fear or worry about any earthquakes. Kha Htein Nan said, "How can a country that struggles even to charge a mobile phone develop? Once the Myitsone Dam is built, there will be no need to worry about collapse due to natural disasters or earthquakes. We will now build it with the latest technology in the world. Regarding earthquakes, in Kachin State, over the past 200 years, there have only been tremors of Magnitude 4 and 6. Now, we will build it to withstand Magnitude 8. There is no need to worry about earthquakes anymore. There is also no need to worry about floods or natural disasters. If it rains heavily in Putao, the water stored at Myitsone will be released in advance. We have calculated exactly how much water will arrive here based on how much it rains in Putao. All of this has been calculated based on the past 200 years. If it rains there, how much water will arrive here, and in how many hours?

- If excuses for reform continue, Myanmar will be the poorest country in the next 20 years, says MP
If excuses for reform continue, Myanmar will be the poorest country in the next 20 years, said U Aye Chan, a representative for Hlaing Thar Yar (East) constituency. He made the remarks during a debate on bank consolidation held in the Pyithu Hluttaw on October 5. "Excuses that it does not yet suit Myanmar's situation have been given since 1962. What is the result of the excuses given in '62? It has become the poorest country in Southeast Asia. I propose this because I cannot bear to see Myanmar become the poorest country for another twenty years," he said. It is understood that after five representatives debated the proposal for bank consolidation, it was recorded that it should be considered when the time is right, and the current situation will be monitored. It is known that Myanmar has four state-owned banks and 27 private banks, and among these 27 private banks, there are seven large banks, two medium-sized banks, and 18 small banks, according to the Central Bank of Myanmar. U Aye Chan, who proposed the bank consolidation, is the son of former Chief of Defence Services (Navy) U Soe Thein, who served as a senior minister responsible for economic policies during the administration of President Thein Sein.
