Phnom Penh's Sen Sok District Urges Citizens to Maintain Drainage Wells

Sen Sok District in Phnom Penh is urging residents to actively cooperate in the maintenance of drainage wells located in front of their homes. The district administration prohibits the closure or filling of these drainage wells without the permission of relevant officials. It is particularly requested that residents assist in removing debris that obstructs the drainage wells during heavy rainfall, thereby contributing to smoother water flow and preventing the flooding of homes and infrastructure. The Sen Sok District Administration reported that as of September 14, 2016, in collaboration with the Department of Public Works and Transport of Phnom Penh, a three-day operation was conducted. This operation involved the use of vehicles and machinery to open drainage well covers, dredge soil, and clean drainage systems along the road leading to Wat Samrong Andeth, in Thong Thmey village, on Ta Chot street in Rung Chark village, and along Street 1019 in Kok Khleang commune. The aim was to facilitate faster water flow and prevent flooding. During this cleanup effort, the team from the district administration identified the cause of water congestion and slow flow in the Thong Thmey village area. It was discovered that some residents had narrowed the rain drainage wells, blocked their inlets, and in many instances, had filled the wells with concrete to an average depth of half a meter along the road leading into Krong Thmey village. These actions led to water congestion, slow flow, and flooding during heavy rains. Currently, the Sen Sok District Administration is in the process of excavating and restoring these wells.
