Prabowo Responds to AHY's Speech Perceived as Government Criticism

Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto has responded to a speech by Democratic Party (Partai Demokrat) Chairman Agus Harimurti Yudhoyono (AHY), which was perceived as critical of the current government. Prabowo stated that criticism is a natural and necessary part of a democratic society, and acknowledged AHY's commitment to cooperate for the benefit of the people. Speaking at the 25th anniversary celebration of the Democratic Party in Jakarta on Wednesday (9/9), Prabowo remarked, "Indeed, some circles assessed that Pak AHY's speech a few days ago was sharp criticism, but brothers and sisters, a great nation that has chosen the path of democracy should be grateful for criticism and correction." He further acknowledged AHY's clear statement of intent and that of the Democratic Party to work together for the people. In his own speech at the same event, AHY emphasized that the Democratic Party's goal is to ensure the success of President Prabowo Subianto's administration. "The Democratic Party's position is clear: we want President Prabowo Subianto's government to succeed. There is nothing else but the success and achievement of this government," AHY stated. He added that if the current administration succeeds, it will be a success for all Indonesian people, not just the government. AHY's political speech at the 25th anniversary event on Saturday (5/9) had drawn attention as it was seen as a "warm-up" for the 2029 presidential election. In his address, AHY touched upon several election-related issues, urging all party cadres in executive, legislative, and regional government roles to remain sensitive and honest to the realities faced by the public on the ground. He also highlighted the importance of professionalism and neutrality for all state apparatus, especially during elections, stating, "Power does not belong to anyone forever. Power is a trust from the people that has a time limit." Responding to AHY's speech, Ahmad Doli Kurnia, Deputy Chairman of the Golkar Party (Partai Golkar), opined that the speech signaled AHY's intention to be a contender in the 2029 presidential election. "However, judging from the nuance of the delivery, gestures, and standing position, AHY seems to be sending a strong signal that he is ready to be one of the contenders in the upcoming presidential election," Doli said when contacted on Monday (7/9).
