Suspension Bridge Plank Collapses in Cambodia's Battambang, Motorcycle and Trailer Fall into River

A plank on a suspension bridge in Kampong Pil village, Wat Tomim commune, Sangke district, Battambang province, Cambodia, collapsed, causing a motorcycle and its trailer to fall into the Sangke River. The rider narrowly escaped by clinging to the bridge's cables. The incident occurred around 5:30 PM on September 19th. According to local residents, the suspension bridge, which is over 100 meters long, was constructed decades ago and serves as a vital crossing for the community. At the time of the accident, a man was riding a motorcycle with a trailer across the bridge from west to east. Near the eastern end of the bridge, a plank approximately one meter in length broke, leading to the motorcycle and trailer plunging into the river. Mr. Yut Thong Ho, the Sangke district police chief, stated that the bridge's age and the potential deterioration of the planks likely contributed to the collapse. He also suggested that the weight of the motorcycle carrying sand and cement may have been a factor. Following the incident, authorities and the Kampong Pil temple committee immediately commenced repair work on the bridge overnight to restore its functionality.
