P520,000 Worth of Suspected Smuggled Cigarettes Seized in Pagadian City Buy-Bust

PAGADIAN CITY, Zamboanga del Sur – Authorities confiscated an estimated P520,000 worth of suspected smuggled cigarettes during a joint buy-bust operation in Barangay Banale, Pagadian City, on Monday evening. Captain Derf Jay Maquinta, spokesperson for the Zamboanga del Sur Police Provincial Office (ZSPPO), said the operation took place around 8:50 p.m. at Purok Gemilina. A joint team conducted a buy-bust operation, posing as buyers of smuggled cigarettes. As a result, an individual, believed to be the suspect, was apprehended, and a significant quantity of cigarettes was seized. The exact brands and origin of the confiscated cigarettes are currently under investigation. However, authorities suspect they were distributed in the Philippines without paying the proper taxes, hence they are being treated as smuggled goods. This operation is part of the ongoing efforts by the police and other relevant agencies to crack down on the circulation of illegal goods in the southern Philippines. Smuggled cigarettes not only harm the domestic legitimate tobacco industry but also pose a risk of becoming a funding source for terrorist groups and criminal syndicates, prompting authorities to heighten their vigilance.
