Five suspects arrested in Da Nang over 2023 robbery of Danish tourists

Five individuals have been arrested in Da Nang City, central Vietnam, for allegedly robbing two Danish tourists three years ago. This incident highlights the importance of ensuring tourist safety and maintaining public order for Vietnam's tourism industry. The suspects, identified as Truong Van Ngoc Toan (33), Ho Tan Cau (42), Nguyen Quoc Quang (39), Huynh Tan Tai (34), and Tran Van Duc (37), were arrested and detained on charges of robbery. The incident occurred in the early hours of August 23, 2023, when the two Danish tourists, Andreas Myrup (24) and William Trollund (23), were heading to their hotel in Hoi An Tay ward. According to the investigation, the tourists had hired Toan and Cau, former motorbike taxi drivers, for a ride to their hotel. Quảng, Tài, and Đức, riding on separate motorcycles, followed them, intending to seize the tourists' belongings. When Andreas Myrup took out his wallet to pay for the ride, Toan shone a flashlight directly into his eyes, blinding him, and then took the entire 540,000 VND. He did not return the agreed-upon change, leading to an argument. As the dispute escalated, Tài and Đức approached the tourists with a wooden stick approximately 60 cm long, threatening them. The tourists then fled into their hotel. The group subsequently left the scene and divided the stolen money near An Hoi Bridge. The case, which occurred in August 2023, was initially suspended. However, the Criminal Police Department of the Da Nang City Police reinvestigated the case, consolidating evidence. They have now gathered sufficient proof to prosecute and arrest the five suspects. With the growth of tourism in Vietnam, ensuring the safety of visitors is a critical concern. Illicit activities, particularly by those in direct contact with tourists like motorbike taxi drivers, can negatively impact Vietnam's tourism image. The government is taking a firm stance against such criminal acts and is working to create an environment where tourists can travel with peace of mind.
