YBS vehicle accidents result in 35 injured and 19 dead within six months

Accidents involving YBS vehicles operating in Yangon have resulted in 35 injuries and 19 deaths within a six-month period, according to records from the Private Transport Supervisory Committee (YRTC). In the period exceeding six months from January 1, 2026, to July 10, 2026, there were a total of 34 YBS vehicle accidents, with 35 individuals injured and 19 fatalities. U Chit Ko Ko, Vice Chairman of the Yangon Region Private Transport Supervisory Committee (YRTC), stated at an awareness discussion for YBS drivers who violate traffic rules, held on May 7 at the training hall of the YRTC headquarters, that monthly discussions are being held twice a month due to the increasing number of YBS drivers violating traffic rules. U Chit Ko Ko, Vice Chairman of YRTC, stated that approximately 1.7 million passengers are transported daily by about 3,700 vehicles and approximately 7,500 YBS drivers. He added that monthly discussions are being held twice a month due to the increasing number of YBS drivers who violate traffic rules. He also said that it is the YBS drivers who safely transport passengers to their destinations every day, and that the most important individuals in the YBS sector should not be those who violate traffic rules. He further stated that they are also the most important individuals for ensuring safety from vehicle and road hazards on major public roads. He explained that when taking action against traffic rule violations, actions are taken only after reviewing the violation records and conducting an examination at the administrative committee meeting every Tuesday. He also urged that YBS vehicles should depart only after closing their doors when passengers are boarding or alighting at bus stops. He warned that if accidents occur and fatalities result from YBS vehicles overtaking each other on the roads, driving in the wrong direction, running red lights, or exceeding the speed limit, YRTC will permanently ban the driver and terminate their contract. He stated that YRTC monitors and takes action using technologically advanced telematics devices and CCTV records from the Traffic Control Center, and conducts strict investigations with sufficient evidence, including checks for drug use. He concluded by saying that by reducing greed and following instructions while driving, accidents and fatalities can be reduced. It has been reported that under the supervision of YRTC, 21 YBS bus line companies, 141 bus lines, and 5,462 vehicles are operating for public transportation in Yangon, transporting over 1.5 million passengers daily with approximately 3,500 vehicles on 132 lines.
