Vietnam, Australia Explore Expanded Defence Cooperation

Vietnam and Australia are exploring avenues to expand defence cooperation between the two countries. This comes as both nations aim to deepen their Comprehensive Strategic Partnership, with a particular focus on pioneering new areas of cooperation such as human resource development, science and technology, innovation, national governance, and sustainable development. Australia is recognized as an important development partner for Vietnam, with cooperation consistently prioritizing practical outcomes and aligning with Vietnam's development priorities. There is confidence that bilateral ties will become increasingly substantive and effective. During defense ministerial talks, both countries reaffirmed their support for ASEAN's common position and underscored the importance of maintaining peace, security, stability, and freedom of navigation and overflight in the region. They also agreed that disputes should be resolved peacefully in accordance with international law, particularly the UN Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS). In its recent national development strategy, Vietnam has prioritized maintaining a peaceful and stable environment as a key objective. This is reflected in domestic policies such as the development of the national program on child protection and child labor prevention and reduction for 2026–2030, and the implementation of resolutions adopted at the third plenum of the Communist Party of Vietnam Central Committee. The national security strategy calls for strengthening resilience, improving preparedness, and proactively safeguarding the country, rather than merely dealing with risks after they arise. Furthermore, under its new development model, Vietnam aims for self-reliance, innovation, humanity, sustainability, and global integration, with people at the core. Science and technology, innovation, digital transformation, and artificial intelligence are designated as key growth drivers. The country is transitioning towards effective governance and sustainable use of its maritime space, underpinned by science and technology, innovation, and digital transformation, rather than solely focusing on resource exploitation. Vietnam also emphasizes the role of honorary consuls in protecting national interests and promoting cooperation abroad. These honorary consuls act as an extension of Vietnam's overseas presence in locations without diplomatic missions, assisting in the protection of citizens and businesses, and fostering cooperation between Vietnam and host countries.
