Top Leader's Visit Injects New Momentum into Vietnam-Canada Relations

The visit of a top Vietnamese leader to Canada is expected to inject new momentum into bilateral relations, further strengthening and deepening ties. This trip is seen as an opportunity to make relations with the UN, the US, and partners more substantive and closely connected, reaffirming Vietnam's proactive and responsible role in global issues, and highlighting its contributions to regional and global peace, stability, cooperation, and development. Currently, Vietnam is Canada's largest trading partner within the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN). The Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for Trans-Pacific Partnership (CPTPP) provides a strong foundation for businesses from both countries to expand their markets. Both sides are actively seeking to diversify markets, supply chains, and economic partners. Leveraging the CPTPP framework, the two countries are looking to expand bilateral economic ties into higher value-added areas such as clean energy, critical minerals, advanced technology, manufacturing, and value-chain linkages. The Canadian Ambassador to Vietnam stated that the visit is an opportunity to further advance bilateral relations, reflecting their substantive nature and enormous potential. Vietnam is implementing its strategy for the development and application of atomic energy for peaceful purposes through 2035, with a vision to 2050, while preparing for projects such as the Ninh Thuan nuclear power plant, a nuclear science and technology center, and new research reactors. This demonstrates Vietnam's commitment to deepening international cooperation in the energy sector and achieving sustainable development goals. Under Vietnam's one-party system, foreign policy emphasizes national independence, self-reliance, peace, cooperation, and multilateralism. The visit to Canada is a strategic move within this diplomatic framework, aiming to enhance Vietnam's presence on the international stage and pursue national interests in both economic growth and security.
