Jakarta Aims for Top 50 Global Cities by 2030

The Governor of Jakarta, Pramono Anung, has set an ambitious target for Jakarta to be ranked among the top 50 global cities in the world by 2029 or 2030. Governor Pramono announced this goal during his speech at the 2026 Jakarta Capital Special Region Posyandu Cadre Jamboree on Health in Cempaka Putih, Central Jakarta, on Friday (11/9). "I hope that by 2029 or 2030, Jakarta will be able to become one of the top 50 or the top 50 global cities in the world," said Pramono. He stated that Jakarta currently holds the 71st position out of 156 global cities. To become a global city, Pramono highlighted the importance of the Human Development Index (HDI) in Jakarta. "Therefore, the main prerequisite for becoming a global city with an improved index, one of which is what is called the HDI, Human Development Index. Jakarta is now number one among all provinces in Indonesia, at 85.05, far ahead of the others," he said. The HDI is measured based on health, education, and expenditure indices. The health index is assessed through life expectancy at birth. Meanwhile, the education index consists of indicators for expected years of schooling and mean years of schooling. Lastly, the HDI is measured through the expenditure index, which is viewed from the indicator of adjusted per capita expenditure. However, it is not only the HDI; a decrease in the Gini ratio, or inequality, is also a focus in DKI Jakarta's efforts to become a global city. "What we have done with education, health, and social welfare, for which we have not cut the budget at all, even increased it, added to it, that is what has caused the Gini ratio to decrease from 0.441 to 0.435, although it is still high." Seeing these figures, Pramono stated that DKI Jakarta is on the right track. He also hopes that the already good numbers can be further improved. "Once again, I always encourage that Jakarta's benchmarking, its comparison, must be with world cities to trigger and encourage Jakarta's society to live healthier, more orderly, more comfortable, neater, and of course, most importantly, to make its people happy," said Pramono. Previously, Pram also set a no less bold target. While inspecting the construction of the Integrated Utility Network Facilities (SJUT) in the Tebet area, South Jakarta, Pram revealed his desire to free Jakarta from messy cables within the next five years. "Frankly, I am planning for all the surface cables to be lowered within five years, and if that can be done, the face of Jakarta will surely be very different. Whether five years is possible or not?
