Thailand to Link Cities with Islands and Coastlines via Seaplanes

Thailand is moving forward with plans to introduce seaplane services, aiming to connect major cities with coastal and island destinations across the country. The first phase of this initiative is targeting the southern provinces of Phuket and Krabi, with operations expected to commence by the end of 2026. Phatthrapong Phatthraprasit, Deputy Minister of Transport and chairman of the Strategic Integration Committee for Seaplane Development, has been actively involved in discussions with relevant agencies in Satun province to advance a feasibility study for seaplane operations. Satun has been identified as a region with significant potential for seaplane tourism due to its extensive coastline, numerous islands, and marine attractions, including Koh Lipe, Tarutao National Park, the Adang-Rawi archipelago, Pak Bara, the La-ngu coastline, Stone Castle 100 Million Years, and the Satun Geopark. Discussions have also encompassed the identification of potential locations for water airports and designated take-off and landing areas. A thorough assessment of each location's potential will be conducted, taking into account aviation safety, legal requirements, environmental impacts, and benefits for local communities. Officials have been instructed to expedite preparations, including the development of necessary knowledge, skills, and training standards for seaplane pilots and ground personnel. Authorities are also studying the feasibility of establishing seaplane landing areas and docking facilities. Surachai Nooprom, acting president of Aeronautical Radio of Thailand (AEROTHAI), stated that the agency has been preparing to provide air traffic services for seaplanes since 2023. AEROTHAI, in collaboration with the Civil Aviation Authority of Thailand (CAAT), organized a workshop in early 2024 titled “First Seaplane Operations Toward Thailand’s Aviation Hub” to foster coordination among agencies and industry stakeholders. Preparations cover a wide range of aspects, including airspace usage, flight routes and procedures, air traffic management, communications, navigation aids, and aircraft tracking systems. These systems are to be integrated with Thailand’s broader aviation network to ensure safe and efficient operations. AEROTHAI has confirmed its readiness to provide air traffic services for seaplanes in Krabi, Phuket, Satun, Trang, and Pattani, as well as other areas that meet operational requirements. The initial focus is on applications from private operators seeking approval for water take-off and landing facilities. Services are anticipated to launch in Krabi and Phuket by the end of 2026, with the potential for the model to be expanded to other destinations as operators secure the necessary approvals. The Ministry of Transport views seaplanes as a valuable addition to Thailand's air transport network, offering faster links between cities, tourism destinations, coastlines, and islands. This initiative is expected to bolster tourism, trade, and investment, while also contributing to Thailand's development as a regional aviation hub and elevating the country's aviation industry towards international standards.
