PM Urges Accelerated Development in Southern Laos, Focusing on Industrial Diversification and Logistics Hub

Prime Minister Sonexay Siphandone reviewed progress on the national socio-economic development plan for the first half of 2026 and discussed a regional development strategy for Champasak, Saravane, Sekong, and Attapeu provinces to strengthen economic links with neighboring countries. The meeting, held in Champasak Province on July 23, brought together ministers, provincial leaders, and representatives from relevant agencies to assess development priorities and identify measures for the remainder of the year. The Prime Minister called for stronger national defense and public security, intensified action against social problems, and comprehensive rural development. He urged the southern provinces to capitalize on the Bolaven Plateau's agricultural potential by modernizing production, expanding processing industries, and developing internationally recognized brands for export. He also stressed the importance of shifting from raw mineral exports to domestic processing, expanding hydropower, solar and wind energy projects, promoting electric vehicles, and improving tourism services with an emphasis on safety and sustainability. Sonexay further called for the development of dry ports, cold storage facilities, and more efficient border procedures to strengthen the region's role as a trade and logistics hub. He also urged Champasak University and vocational institutions to produce more skilled workers and entrepreneurs while upgrading regional healthcare services to reduce the need for overseas medical treatment. Government agencies, the private sector, and development partners have signed a joint commitment to position the Lao PDR as a leading biodiversity tourism destination in Asia through sustainable conservation and nature-based tourism. Laos has intensified preparations to host the 3rd Review Conference of the Convention on Cluster Munitions (3RC-CCM), with the National Committee for UXO Clearance convening a coordination meeting on July 23 to assess progress and ensure the event’s successful organization. Prime Minister Sonexay Siphandone visited Toumlane Subdistrict in Saravane Province on July 22, calling for stronger local governance, sustainable economic development, and improved public services. A senior official said last week at the First National Media Conference that Lao media plays a vital role in communicating Party guidelines, government policies, laws, and regulations to the public while serving as a bridge between the people and the Party-State. The Bolaven Plateau Coffee Producers Cooperative (PCFC) exported 46 containers of coffee in 2025, comprising 40 containers of Arabica and six containers of Robusta, while also supplying the domestic market, according to sources from Champasak Province.
