Singha Beer Family Dispute: Mother Withdraws Lawsuit Against Son

A land ownership dispute within Thailand's Singha beer empire has seen a potential resolution as the mother withdrew a lawsuit against her son, following court advice to engage in dialogue and mend family ties. Chiranuj Bhirombhakdi had sued her son, Mr. Siranudh Scott, nicknamed Psi, under Thailand’s “ungrateful child” law, which allows parents to reclaim assets previously given to children deemed unappreciative through their behavior. This followed two rounds of mediation on June 10 and June 16, but Psi, 29, whose father is Scottish, and his mother did not meet in person as the court separated the sessions. During the second mediation session, the court advised both mother and son to resume communication, noting that the mother-son and family bond is the best way to resolve the issue. This advice aligned with her intentions, leading her to withdraw the lawsuit to allow both parties to discuss the matter and together find a solution with love and goodwill towards each other. She clarified that she has never been indifferent to the problem and has always listened to opinions of all sides. However, she chose not to express her opinion publicly because she considered it a sensitive family matter and did not want to cause distress or negatively impact those involved, including members of the Bhirombhakdi family and the Boonrawd Brewery Group, which are not involved in the dispute. Regarding the conflict between Psi and his older brother Sunit Scott, nicknamed Pi, who is in his 30s, Chiranuj affirmed that she loves both of her children with all her heart and that feeling has never changed. She also stated that if proving the facts through the judicial process is the path her children choose, she is ready to respect that decision, hoping that the truth will be revealed and justice will be served for both of her children. Psi had posted an emotional video in May accusing his older brother Sunit of repeatedly abusing him when he was a teenager. Sunit later denied the allegations in a video clip posted online, but Singha parent Boonrawd dismissed him from his executive role with the company. “I felt I needed to speak out, otherwise I would have been dead inside,” Psi told AFP. Psi said in a second interview that the alleged sexual abuse occurred from when he was nine to 13 years old, every time his brother returned home from boarding school for the summer. He added that he first told other family members of the alleged abuse about three years ago but at the time he accepted financial compensation from them to keep quiet. However, after his mother sued him this year, he decided to speak out and is now planning to pursue legal action. “I’ve been in a family, in a system, in an institution that’s kept my voice silent,” he said.
