Bapanas Assures El Nino Won't Impact Indonesia's Food Security

The National Food Agency (Bapanas) is closely monitoring the impact of climate change caused by the El Nino phenomenon on national food production, stating that there is currently no significant threat to food security. Bapanas Head Arief Prasetyo Adi acknowledged the potential for drought and extreme weather conditions due to El Nino to affect crop yields. However, he assured that the government is taking measures to ensure adequate food stock and price stabilization. He emphasized that production and distribution channels for key commodities, particularly rice, corn, chili peppers, and onions, are under close observation. Indonesia, situated in the tropical region of Southeast Asia, is susceptible to climate change impacts such as reduced rainfall and increased temperatures associated with El Nino. Historically, El Nino has led to decreased crop yields, causing food price hikes and inflation. In response, Bapanas, in coordination with the Ministry of Agriculture and other relevant agencies, is promoting adaptation strategies, including improving irrigation systems, introducing climate-resilient crop varieties, and providing technical assistance to farmers. Adi reiterated that ensuring the public's access to food is the top priority. He added that the government is prepared to consider releasing strategic reserves or implementing import measures if necessary.
