Vietnam Positions Nuclear Power Development as Key to National Energy Security and Green Growth
Vietnam is positioning nuclear power development as a crucial strategy for enhancing national energy security and achieving green growth. Discussions on its necessity and feasibility took place at an expert conference in Nha Trang on September 21, 2023.
Vietnam views the promotion of nuclear power development as a key policy agenda item for achieving its dual goals of sustainable economic growth and establishing national energy security. This stance was reiterated at a scientific conference titled “Nuclear Power Development for National Green Growth and Energy Security,” held in Nha Trang City, Khanh Hoa Province, on September 21, 2023. The conference was jointly organized by the Central Propaganda Department, the Ministry of Science and Technology, and the Khanh Hoa Provincial Party Committee. Vietnam is facing a surge in electricity demand accompanying its rapid economic development, making the transition away from reliance on fossil fuels an urgent issue. Nuclear power is expected to be central to the country's green growth strategy as a clean energy source capable of significantly reducing greenhouse gas emissions. Furthermore, diversifying energy sources is recognized as indispensable for building a more robust national energy security system that is less susceptible to external influences. The conference addressed a wide range of issues, including ensuring safety in the construction and operation of nuclear power plants, technical challenges, human resource development, and the establishment of international cooperation frameworks. Vietnam intends to deepen its collaboration with international organizations such as the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) and adopt the latest safety standards and technologies. In the future, nuclear power is expected to play a significant role in Vietnam's energy mix, contributing to the balance between economic development and environmental preservation.
