Sara Duterte impeachment trial schedule adjustment discussed due to budget deliberations

The Senate impeachment court is considering an adjusted schedule for the impeachment trial of Vice President Sara Duterte. Presiding Officer Francis "Chiz" Escudero presented a draft trial calendar for October and November to the counsels, citing the Senate's need to commence deliberations on the proposed 2027 national budget. Escudero emphasized that the schedule is subject to confirmation and finalization next week. Under the proposed schedule, trial sessions are slated for October 1 and 2, October 5 to 9, and October 12 to 15, running the entire day from 10 a.m. until early evening. However, there will be a temporary suspension of trial from October 16 until November 8 to give way to committee hearings of the Committee on Finance. "The budget is the single most important piece of legislation that the Senate, sitting as a legislative body, should enact and pass every given year," Escudero explained, highlighting the priority of the national budget. The trial is set to resume on November 9 and 16, both Mondays, with sessions scheduled from 10 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Normal programming will then resume on November 23 until the case is concluded. Impeachment court spokesperson Regie Tongol stated that the schedule adjustment was a "call of many senator-judges" to hasten proceedings and meet the court's target of finishing the trial before the year ends. He added, "That is one of the things that our senator-judges considered, as well as the schedule of the Senate's legislative agenda. How can they fit in both duties of the Senate in such a short period of time given that there is an expectation that the trial will be over by December? So it is part of the court's participation in trying to expedite the matter."
