Vietnam and France are set to strengthen their collaboration in the fields of science, technology, and innovation with the activation of a cooperation agreement. This accord prioritizes enhancing exchanges of experts, scientists, and students, promoting joint research, organizing technology conferences and exhibitions, and supporting the development of technology transfer organizations and innovation ecosystems between the two nations. The bilateral relationship between Vietnam and France boasts a history of over 50 years, with scientific and technological cooperation serving as a crucial pillar for Vietnam's pursuit of sustainable development goals. Amidst escalating global technological competition, Vietnam urgently seeks to expand its access to advanced technologies through strengthened international partnerships. In a recent meeting, General Secretary of the Communist Party of Vietnam and President To Lam reaffirmed Vietnam's high regard for its relationship with France, emphasizing that scientific and technological cooperation is emerging as a strategically significant new avenue for both countries. In the realm of space development, during the state visit of French President Emmanuel Macron to Vietnam in May 2025, the Vietnam Academy of Science and Technology (VAST) signed a Letter of Intent for cooperation in the development of Earth observation satellites with the French National Centre for Space Studies (CNES) and Airbus Defence and Space (ADS). This initiative aims to expand collaboration on developing next-generation satellites for Vietnam, including technological solutions, human resource training, and the sharing of applications for sustainable development. According to Vietnam's Ambassador to France, Trinh Duc Hai, France is a leading European nation in science and technology, with notable strengths in aerospace, energy, nuclear technology, transportation, healthcare, digital technology, artificial intelligence, high-tech agriculture, and technologies supporting the green transition. These areas align closely with Vietnam's current development priorities, and cooperation with France is expected to enhance Vietnam's technological capabilities.
