Battambang Police Arrest Jewelry Seller in Major Fraud Case, Seize Large Quantity of Counterfeit Items

Battambang Provincial Police have arrested a 35-year-old woman on suspicion of defrauding multiple citizens by posing as a seller and pawnbroker of jewelry. The alleged fraudulent activities occurred between March 13 and June 1, 2026, with the total value of the defrauded assets believed to be substantial. The arrested suspect has been identified as Yun Rasmey, a resident of Battambang city who operated a jewelry stall in the Kun Khlong market in Moun Russey district. Victims have come forward alleging that the suspect sold them counterfeit jewelry and failed to return pawned items. One victim, Van Malihya, 34, stated that she purchased a platinum bracelet for 2,850,000 riels (approximately $710) and a platinum necklace for 2,000,000 riels (approximately $500) on March 13, 2026. Approximately three months later, the bracelet turned black and was later identified as a fake when examined at a market in Battambang province. Another victim, Sa Soktepy, 43, reported pawning a gold necklace weighing 8ជី (approximately 96 grams) for 10,000,000 riels (approximately $2,500) on April 17, 2026. When she attempted to retrieve the necklace on June 15, 2026, Ms. Rasmey claimed it was lost and repeatedly delayed its return. Further complaints came from Rath Mady, 38, Suong Kim, 37, and Vuth Sokha, 35, who alleged similar experiences involving the pawn or alteration of platinum and gold jewelry. In these cases, after receiving payment or collateral, the suspect allegedly failed to return the items or provided fakes. Following the complaints, the police initiated an investigation. On July 1, 2026, officers searched the suspect's residence in Battambang city and subsequently arrested Yun Rasmey. She was taken to the Moun Russey District Police Inspectorate for further legal proceedings. Authorities seized a significant amount of items from the suspect, including 75 rings, 11 pairs of earrings, 52 bracelets, and 32 necklaces, all suspected to be made of counterfeit materials. Other seized items include a jewelry scale, jewelry boxes, a Nubia V80 mobile phone, invoices, and fragments of a necklace.
