Cambodia Cracks Down on Illegal Fishing, Releases Fingerlings

In Stueng Trang District, Kampong Cham Province, on July 21, 2026, fisheries officials, in collaboration with local authorities and the fishing community of Khup Ta Nguon Commune, conducted an operation to crack down on illegal fishing activities. The operation, conducted at Boeng Prathes in Khup Ta Nguon Commune, resulted in the dismantling and destruction of illegal fishing gear. According to fisheries officials, the crackdown was carried out with the coordination of the prosecutor's office of the Kampong Cham Provincial Court. During the operation, seized evidence was destroyed on-site. This included 15 mosquito net fishing traps, 450 meters of mosquito net barriers, and 225 stakes. Additionally, 5 kilograms of mixed fingerlings were released back into the natural lake. This action is part of ongoing efforts by Cambodian authorities to ensure the sustainability of fishery resources and curb illegal fishing practices. In recent years, Cambodia has faced increasing pressure on its aquatic resources due to economic development, prompting the government to strengthen enforcement against illegal fishing and promote sustainable fishing methods.
