Glass Spill and Roadworks Snarl Weekend Traffic Out of Ho Chi Minh City

Severe traffic congestion choked roads heading east out of Ho Chi Minh City on Saturday as a truck spill of glass panels compounded ongoing expressway expansion works. From around 10 a.m., several roads in the city's eastern districts, including Vo Chi Cong Street and the Phu Huu roundabout, began experiencing backups stretching approximately 5 km. These arteries connect to the Ho Chi Minh City-Long Thanh-Dau Giay Expressway and are typically burdened with heavy traffic on weekends due to surging demand for trips to popular coastal destinations like Vung Tau and Phan Thiet. Roughly an hour before the jam intensified, a truck carrying dozens of glass panels was traveling along Vo Chi Cong. As it approached the Phu Huu roundabout, the straps securing the load reportedly snapped, sending the panels crashing onto the roadway. Shattered glass obstructed two lanes. Authorities quickly deployed warning cones well ahead of the incident and began directing vehicles around the debris. Despite these efforts, vehicles could be seen inching forward for stretches exceeding a kilometer to navigate the Phu Huu roundabout. Vo Chi Cong Street, a crucial link between the Cat Lai port cluster and the former District 7 area, is known for its consistently high traffic volume. The glass spill exacerbated the congestion, prolonging delays. Further compounding the issue, traffic was backed up for over 4 km between the Long Phuoc and Long Truong toll stations for vehicles heading from Ho Chi Minh City towards Dong Nai province. In this section, two lanes are currently fenced off for expressway widening work, forcing vehicles into a slow crawl, bumper to bumper. This convergence of accidents and infrastructure projects highlights the persistent challenges Vietnam faces in managing its rapidly growing transportation needs amidst economic development.
