50 people including Chinese nationals arrested for operating online scams in Namhsan

Mekong, September 18 The military council announced on September 18 that it had arrested 10 Chinese nationals and 40 Myanmar nationals, totaling 50 people, for operating online scams near Konyaing village in Namhsan Township, southern Shan State. According to the military council, the online scam operators in Konyaing village were arrested on September 17, and nine Chinese men and one woman, along with 26 Myanmar men and 14 women, were apprehended. The announcement stated that 20 Starlink sets, 25 laptops, 20 all-in-one computers, 217 mobile phones, 9 PC cases, 2 printers, and 1 generator, as well as workshops, living quarters, and cooking areas, were seized. "Such operations are a security concern for local residents. It was too late to know that such online businesses were operating near the village, and the villagers did not fully understand what kind of business it was. They only found out after the arrests," said a local resident of Konyaing. The military council stated that those arrested, including foreign nationals and perpetrators of criminal acts, would be prosecuted in accordance with existing laws after investigations. The military council's announcement also stated that crackdowns on online scams and online gambling operations are currently underway in Myanmar, in cooperation with neighboring countries, regional countries, and international organizations.
