Laos-Vietnam Friendship: Reaffirming Special Bonds After Over Half a Century

Laos and Vietnam have reaffirmed their "special bonds" and "great friendship," emphasizing the significance of their cooperation spanning over half a century. This relationship, which originated from shared revolutionary struggles dating back to the establishment of the Indochinese Communist Party in the 1930s, has been nurtured by leaders and citizens of both nations. Following the founding of the Lao People's Party in 1955, formal diplomatic relations were established in 1962. The signing of the Laos-Vietnam Treaty of Friendship and Cooperation in 1977 provided a legal and strategic framework that deepened bilateral ties, which were further elevated to a "Great Friendship" in 2019. Politically, high-level exchanges and strategic consultations continue to reinforce mutual trust. Economically, Vietnam remains one of Laos' largest foreign investors, with investments valued in the billions of US dollars across key sectors such as energy, mining, agriculture, and telecommunications. The two countries are working towards a shared goal of increasing bilateral trade to US$5 billion by 2025. Cooperation also flourishes in culture and education, with a significant number of Lao students pursuing studies in Vietnam, reflecting Vietnam's long-standing commitment to supporting Laos' human resource development. The joint inscription of Hin Nam No National Park and Phong Nha-Ke Bang National Park as a World Heritage Site highlights strengthened environmental partnership. Both nations have recommitted to preserving and strengthening this partnership, built on mutual trust, shared history, and common aspirations for peace and prosperity.
