Ex-Inmates Depict Prison Realities Through UP Law Center Mural

MANILA, Philippines — A group of former inmates or persons deprived of liberty (PDLs) is hoping to inform the public about the conditions in the country’s prisons through their mural at the University of the Philippines (UP) Law Center, which was unveiled on Friday. Joey de Leon, president of the Bagong Buhay Group of Artists, said the mural aims to visually convey the realities of prison conditions to the public. He added that the group hopes the mural would serve as an informative piece for the public and foster greater understanding of the conditions of PDLs. The Philippines has long been grappling with severe prison overcrowding, with facilities often holding inmates far beyond their intended capacity. This situation has been a recurring concern for human rights advocates and international bodies, raising questions about the adequacy of the country's correctional system and its adherence to international standards.
