Vietnam Allocates VND50 Billion for Lai Chau Flood Recovery

The Vietnamese government has decided to allocate VND50 billion (approximately US$2 million) to support recovery efforts in Lai Chau Province following devastating flash floods. As of 3:30 p.m. on July 17, the disaster had resulted in one death, two injuries, and five missing persons. Officers and soldiers of the Lai Chau provincial Border Guard, along with police and military forces, are actively engaged in search operations, evacuating residents from dangerous areas, and providing recovery support. Sniffer-dog teams have also been deployed to aid in the search for the missing. This severe weather event is part of a series of adverse conditions that have affected mountainous and midland areas in the northern region, including provinces like Lao Cai, Dien Bien, Son La, Tuyen Quang, and Thai Nguyen, from July 8 to 11. In Son La Province, a car was struck by rocks from a landslide, injuring one person. Vietnam is increasingly facing extreme weather events due to climate change, prompting the government to issue directives for strengthening disaster prevention and response measures. Strict implementation of instructions from Party General Secretary and State President To Lam, as well as government directives, is being emphasized. While Vietnam is strengthening its efforts towards energy transition and sustainable development, balancing economic growth with international emissions reduction commitments, the recent disaster underscores the vulnerability of infrastructure and the urgent need to enhance disaster response capabilities, particularly in mountainous regions.
