Experts warn the river's biological network is on the verge of collapse. Researchers have tracked these devastating environmental changes from Mae Ai district into Myanmar. Assoc. Prof. Dr. Apinun Suvarnaraksha, Dean of the Faculty of Fisheries Technology at Maejo University, identifies industrial pollution and human-made structures as the primary culprits, creating a highly toxic environment. Dr. Apinun's research team investigated twenty-two fishing spots and critical fish spawning grounds. Their findings indicate fish numbers began dropping dramatically years ago, with the initial construction of the Pha Yang Mon weir in Chiang Rai significantly hindering upstream migration from the Mekong River. This loss of natural replenishment capacity was the first major blow. Compounding the issue, large commercial mines in Myanmar's Shan State are releasing dangerous heavy metals directly into the shared water system. These toxic chemicals flow downstream and settle into the Kok Riverbed. Dr. Suebsakul Kidnukorn from Mae Fah Luang University notes that toxic sediment from these foreign mines has been accumulating since late 2024, physically altering the river's landscape. Local Lahu ethnic community leaders report the natural rocky riverbed has vanished under thick industrial sediment, leading to the disappearance of water insects, small fish, shrimp, and native snails. This loss of small aquatic life disrupts the entire ecological food chain, as larger fish lack natural food sources, a domino effect that scientists warn could permanently destroy the ecosystem. The danger extends to human health, as local consumption of fish and aquatic animals from the river leads to the intake of heavy metals. Academic experts are urging immediate action, proposing a joint task force involving local government, university academics, and regional farmers to monitor food and agricultural supply chains. However, a significant hurdle is the lack of local scientific testing facilities, requiring samples to be sent to Bangkok, causing delays in emergency responses. Setting up local testing laboratories and creating detailed risk maps are recommended to quickly identify polluted areas and warn rural communities. Experts also call for fair financial compensation for farmers forced to leave contaminated 'red zones' and for the government to secure alternative clean water sources, emphasizing the need for immediate, well-planned government intervention.
