Battambang Province, Cambodia, to Advance Circular Economy-Based Waste Management Project with Japanese Support

Battambang Province in western Cambodia is moving forward with discussions to promote a waste management project based on circular economy principles, with support from the Japanese government. On August 6, 2026, Battambang Provincial Governor Sok Lou met with Mr. Kiichi IKEHARA, First Secretary of the Japanese Embassy in Cambodia, to discuss the "Circular Economy-Based Waste Management Project in Battambang Province." During the meeting, the Japanese side proposed providing waste processing equipment to Battambang Province to enhance waste management efficiency, reduce the volume of garbage to be landfilled, and extend the lifespan of landfills, in line with circular economy principles. This equipment is intended to be handed over to operators capable of managing and implementing it according to Japanese technical standards, in cooperation with the Ministry of Environment and relevant parties. Governor Sok Lou expressed his sincere gratitude to the Japanese government for its consideration and support for this important project. He expressed his hope that the project will contribute to making waste management in Battambang Province more efficient, extend the life of landfills, and promote a cleaner and more sustainable environment. He also expressed his full support and anticipation for the project's practical implementation in the province in the near future. Battambang Province has a landfill located in Ta Khream village, Bar Non district, covering a total area of 20.8 hectares. This landfill is a project funded by the Asian Development Bank (ADB) and implemented by the Ministry of Public Works and Transport.
