The popular social media page "Thoi Tiet Ha Noi," which boasts over 301,000 followers, has issued a formal apology for a controversial travel warning issued to tourists planning trips to Quang Ninh province. Provincial authorities are investigating the incident, which they state caused public anxiety and negatively impacted the local tourism sector, with potential legal repercussions. The warning, posted around 11:07 AM on July 12, advised potential visitors about the weekend weather, stating, "Think twice if you haven’t booked your rooms yet. The weather will turn bad from the evening of July 18. You may lose your chance to return to the mainland if you wander out to the islands." In a letter of apology released on July 14, the administrator of "Thoi Tiet Ha Noi" admitted that their "alarmist tone" led to the information being interpreted "more negatively than originally intended." The administrator expressed sincere apologies to Quang Ninh provincial leaders, authorities, residents, and tourists, as well as tourism businesses, for the "unintended impact" of the viral post. The page pledged to review its editorial process before publishing content that affects the community and stated its readiness to cooperate with state management agencies. However, the Quang Ninh Department of Culture, Sports, and Tourism had previously requested the Provincial Police to verify the incident. The department highlighted that the fanpage published unverified information without citing official government sources, which triggered public anxiety and harmed local tourism. A preliminary review by the agency suggested the post used "speculative, alarming language," leading readers to believe the weather would become "exceptionally dangerous," potentially damaging the psychological state of tourists and local tourism activities. Quang Ninh province is a major tourist destination, having welcomed over 12.4 million visitors in the first six months of the year, a 3% increase compared to the same period last year. International arrivals exceeded 2.6 million, and total tourism revenue reached nearly 35.2 trillion VND, up 21%. The province aims to attract 22.5 million visitors this year with tourism revenue exceeding 68.5 trillion VND. The incident could have implications for these ambitious targets.
