Jokowi Details Gibran's Education Amidst Vice Presidential Candidacy Lawsuit

President Joko Widodo (Jokowi) has detailed the educational background of his eldest son, Gibran Rakabuming Raka, who served as Vice President, in response to a lawsuit questioning his eligibility during the 2024 Presidential Election. Jokowi stated that the matter has entered the legal realm and that he will follow the ongoing legal process. He explained that Gibran completed his primary education at SD Negeri 16 Surakarta and SMP Negeri 1 Surakarta, before pursuing his secondary education at Orchid Park Secondary School in Singapore up to the O Level. He then continued his studies through a pathway program at UTS Insearch in Australia before enrolling at the Management Development Institute of Singapore (MDIS). The lawsuit, filed by Denny Indrayana and others, alleges structured fraud involving government parties during Jokowi's administration that allowed Gibran to qualify as a vice presidential candidate. However, President Jokowi dismissed these claims, asserting that Gibran met the registration requirements set by the General Election Commission (KPU) and that there was no need for him to retake domestic high school equivalency exams ('Paket C') after studying abroad. The petitioners are challenging the fulfillment of minimum educational requirements for presidential and vice presidential candidates as stipulated in Article 169 letter r of the Election Law, seeking Gibran's disqualification. They also question the provision in KPU Regulation No. 19 of 2023, which exempts candidates educated abroad from submitting high school graduation proofs if they possess university degrees.
