Myanmar's Kyaukphyu Battlefront Expands as Arakan Army and Junta Clash on Multiple Fronts

Burma News International (BNI) is a network of 15 independent media and news organizations based in and around Burma Clashes between the Myanmar military junta and the ethnic Arakan Army (AA) have intensified in western Myanmar's Rakhine (Arakan) State, with fighting erupting simultaneously across three locations in Kyaukphyu Township. Since May, hostilities were primarily concentrated near the town of Sanae and the Taung Maw Gyi naval station. However, starting in late July, fighting spread to areas surrounding the villages of Minpyin, Yaynantaung, and Zaichaung. "Fighting has been ongoing for about a week at three locations near Minpyin and Yaynantaung, around Zaichaung, and near the Taung Maw Gyi naval station. At times, the sound of gunfire and heavy weapons is extremely loud," a male resident of Kyaukphyu told DMG. These village areas had previously seen clashes until late April, but the situation temporarily calmed when the fighting shifted toward the naval station in May. The renewed violence erupted after junta forces regrouped and advanced on AA-controlled territory, prompting the ethnic armed group to counterattack from prepared defensive positions. "The military likely believed the Arakan Army was focused only on Sanae and advanced. However, the AA was waiting in position, inflicting heavy casualties before the junta troops retreated. Now, the AA is pushing forward and engaging them again," said a resident monitoring the military situation. Since mid-2025, the military regime has deployed thousands of troops backed by naval and air support in repeated attempts to push into AA-controlled territory in Kyaukphyu. According to ground sources, junta columns have faced constant setbacks, suffering heavy casualties from the AA's defensive maneuvers and multi-directional counter-offensives. "The Arakan Army is in a position to seize Kyaukphyu at any time. However, rather than launching major assaults to capture key bases, they appear to be focusing on wearing down junta forces," an informed local noted. "This raises questions about whether the Kyaukphyu front presents particular military and political challenges for the AA." By June 2025, AA forces had advanced to within six miles of Kyaukphyu town, approaching the Chinese-backed Kyaukphyu Special Economic Zone (SEZ) and blockading both the Danyawadi Naval Base and Police Battalion No. 32. However, beginning in late July 2025, the AA withdrew from several areas within the SEZ footprint, including the Kyattein, Katthabyay, and Kandi village tracts. Locals and observers suggest these strategic withdrawals indicate that the Kyaukphyu front presents unique military and political constraints for the Arakan Army, particularly regarding China's significant geopolitical and economic interests in the area.
