Prabowo Pledges to End Hunger in Indonesia, Focusing on Malnourished School Children

President Prabowo Subianto has reiterated his target to reduce poverty and hunger in Indonesia. He stated that a country with great natural wealth should not allow its people to be food insecure. Prabowo made the statement in front of thousands of students and guests at the 100th Anniversary Thanksgiving Reception of Pondok Modern Darussalam Gontor, Ponorogo, on Saturday, September 19, 2026. "I don't want anyone to be hungry in Indonesia," said Prabowo. He specifically highlighted the condition of children who go to school hungry or are malnourished. "I want no Indonesian children to be malnourished. They should not go to school hungry," he said. According to Prabowo, this condition should not occur in a country that has fertile land and abundant natural resources. "A fertile Indonesia, an Indonesia with so much wealth, there should be no hungry people on the Indonesian earth," he said. Prabowo said that the mandate he received as president would be used to encourage poverty eradication. He also linked the food problem with Indonesia's ability to meet the food needs of its own people. Prabowo called food independence an important condition for a country to stand on its own without relying on other countries. In previous state of the nation addresses, the government has stated that it has achieved self-sufficiency in eight food commodities by 2026.
