Cambodia Navigates Growing Digital Asset Market Risks Amidst Expansion
As the digital asset market expands across Southeast Asia and beyond, new risks such as fraud and phishing attacks are emerging. Platforms like Bitget are bolstering security, while Cambodia's regulators are mandating cybersecurity and risk management, reflecting a growing awareness of the need for robust technical and legal frameworks.
The rapid expansion of the digital asset market in recent years has brought new opportunities for investors across Southeast Asia and beyond. However, it has also introduced new risks such as fraud, phishing attacks, and unauthorized account access. Addressing these risks is becoming as crucial as the services offered by digital asset platforms. Bitget, one of the world's leading digital asset trading platforms, released its 2025 Security Report and launched its annual "Anti-Scam Month" campaign in June. The report details the scale of security threats faced by users of digital financial platforms. In 2025, Bitget's security system blocked over 150 million malicious attack requests and identified more than 13,000 high-risk IP addresses with malicious intent. The platform's website security system recorded over 2.8 billion intercepted attacks through personalized defense measures and blocked over 1.5 billion Distributed Denial-of-Service (DDoS) attack attempts during 2025. Furthermore, 18,135 user protection cases were resolved, with the platform recovering approximately $32.3 million USD for users affected by security incidents and fraudulent activities. Hon Ng, Chief Legal Officer at Bitget, stated, "The industry is entering a multi-asset era where users can access a wider range of products and markets through a single platform. As this accessibility grows, so too must our responsibility in security." The theme for this year, "More Assets, Stronger Shield: Stay Safe in the Multi-Asset Era," reflects the structural shifts in how digital financial platforms operate. As platforms expand beyond digital assets to offer access to stock markets, commodities, and other financial instruments, the types of fraud and security threats also expand. Users familiar with the risks in one market may become less vigilant against specific threats arising in others. Bitget's security infrastructure enhancements in 2025 include strengthening authentication using industry-standard security protocols, expanding Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA) for high-risk account activities, and deploying machine learning-based behavioral analysis to detect suspicious activities. The platform also expanded its Anti-Scam Center and ran the "Smarter Eyes Challenge," an exercise to identify phishing and scams, which attracted nearly 50,000 participants. User education is a core component of these efforts. Bitget reported that its "Anti-Scam Month" campaigns in 2024 and 2025 reached approximately 1.38 billion people globally through educational content, security resources, and community initiatives. The company also collaborates with specialized blockchain security firms to share threat intelligence and counter-fraud research. The security landscape of digital asset platforms is also becoming increasingly intertwined with regulators and users. The National Bank of Cambodia's Prakas No. B7-024-735 on cryptoasset activities, effective December 2024, incorporates cybersecurity and risk management requirements as key obligations for licensed cryptoasset service providers, underscoring the understanding that user protection in this sector requires both legal and technical frameworks to go hand in hand. Separately, in June 2026, Bitget announced it would offer free Level 2 market data for U.S. stocks to eligible users. Level 2 data provides deeper transparency and insight into all orders and trades in the market, information previously available only to institutional traders and professional trading desks due to the high cost of market data licenses. Gracy Chen, CEO of Bitget, commented, "In traditional markets, data and deep insights had to be bought at a high price. We are removing that barrier by offering professional-grade stock market data to our users, who can now utilize tools that were previously restricted to a niche segment of the market." The deployment of comprehensive security infrastructure and the globalization of market data point to a single direction: as digital financial platforms mature, the gap between what was exclusively for professionals or institutions and what ordinary investors can access is shrinking. Responsibly managing this transition, both in terms of user protection and regulatory compliance, is the primary challenge for the industry in the coming years.
