Vietnam's NA Convenes Extraordinary Session for WMD Non-Proliferation Law

Vietnam's National Assembly (NA) convened its first extraordinary session of the 16th tenure, focusing on the deliberation of a draft law on the non-proliferation of weapons of mass destruction (WMD). Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of National Defence Gen. Phan Van Giang, presenting the WMD non-proliferation bill, said the draft aims to swiftly and fully translate the Party and State’s policies and guidelines on safeguarding the Fatherland early and from afar, as well as on deeper international integration, into legislation, including the policy of joining multilateral nonproliferation mechanisms. The NA's first extraordinary session also stressed efficient resource use and national sovereignty. This extraordinary session highlights Vietnam's commitment to strengthening national security and deepening its international cooperation. Under its one-party system, Vietnam has been pursuing a foreign policy that balances economic growth with adherence to international norms and the maintenance of national sovereignty. The deliberation of this bill is seen as part of this broader strategy.
