Unusual Typhoon Path: Impact on Vietnam?

Typhoon No. 3 (Kujira), which was expected to pass off the coast of Vietnam, has unexpectedly changed its course eastward, a phenomenon attributed by the National Center for Hydro-Meteorological Forecasting to an interaction with Typhoon Dolphin in the Pacific. While this unusual deviation is predicted to have limited direct impact on Vietnam, authorities are urging caution regarding related weather phenomena. Typhoon No. 3 moved eastward and is expected to weaken into a tropical depression and then a low-pressure area after reaching Luzon Island, Philippines, with no likelihood of returning to the East Sea. The center explained that Typhoon No. 3 was situated within a tropical convergence zone that stretched across the northern East Sea and connected to Typhoon Dolphin in the northwest Pacific. Despite being separated by approximately 2,200 km, the combination of Typhoon Dolphin's extensive strong wind field and the activity of the southwesterly monsoon to its south pushed Typhoon No. 3 eastward. Meanwhile, Typhoon Dolphin, located about 400 km east of Japan's Okinawa, has maximum wind speeds of force 13 (144 km/h) and gusts up to force 17. It is forecast to move towards Okinawa and then northward, with no anticipated impact on mainland Vietnam. However, the influence of these typhoons is expected to strengthen the southwesterly monsoon, leading to strong winds and high waves in the central East Sea and from Vietnam's Central Highlands to southern regions from August 6th to 7th. Maritime warnings have been issued, particularly for vessels at sea. Furthermore, heavy rain and thunderstorms are forecast for northern Vietnam and the North Central region, raising concerns about potential flooding in urban and low-lying areas, river swells, and landslides in mountainous regions. Parts of the Central Highlands and southern Vietnam are also expected to experience localized heavy rainfall. In response to these weather conditions, the Hoa Binh Hydropower Plant has opened one of its spillway gates as part of flood regulation procedures. Local authorities have been requested to inform residents and businesses and to implement appropriate safety measures. This unusual shift in Typhoon No. 3's trajectory underscores the complex nature of weather patterns and the importance of accurate forecasting and preparedness in Vietnam, a nation increasingly vulnerable to climate change impacts.
