Top-Scoring Student Chooses Electronics Engineering, Reflecting Shifting Career Aspirations in Cambodia

The notion that achieving top grades automatically leads to university education is being challenged in Cambodia. Young Khon Pheakdey, who earned 'A' grades, has chosen to pursue electronics engineering at the National Polytechnic Institute of Cambodia (NPIC), citing high employment opportunities and the prospect of a swift career launch that aligns with his interests and family support goals. Pheakdey explained his choice, stating, "I chose electronics engineering because it's a field I'm passionate about, and I see a vast job market for it. Upon graduation, we have high employment opportunities and can set clear career goals to support our families." The former top-scoring student also lauded NPIC's facilities, describing them as spacious, clean, and surrounded by a green environment. The institute is equipped with modern technical equipment that allows students to practice hands-on, facilitating quicker learning and better understanding due to the quality of the instructors. Pheakdey, who received a 100% scholarship for his chosen field, affirmed that the scholarship not only alleviates his family's financial burden but also serves as a significant motivator and a source of pride for his family regarding his achievements. He concluded by urging Cambodian youth to consider vocational training (TVET), emphasizing that it provides knowledge, practical skills, and excellent job prospects.
