Thailand Pushes Chumphon-Ranong Port Railway Project, Worth 2.7 Trillion Baht, Construction to Start in 2027

The Department of Rail Transport (DRT) in Thailand has announced the advancement of the strategic "Missing Link" railway project connecting Chumphon province on the Gulf of Thailand side with Ranong province on the Andaman Sea side. The project is estimated to cost 27 billion baht (approximately $730 million USD), with construction targeted to begin in 2027. This railway plan aims to traverse the Thai peninsula, resolve land transportation bottlenecks, and shorten the cargo transport route from the Gulf of Thailand to the Andaman Sea. This is expected to strengthen the connection between ports on the east and west coasts, leading to reduced logistics costs and increased efficiency within Thailand. Furthermore, it is anticipated to enhance the functionality of Ranong Port and contribute to the revitalization of the regional economy. The Thai government is promoting policies to foster economic growth through infrastructure investment, such as the Eastern Economic Corridor (EEC) development, and this railway project is positioned as part of that initiative. It is also considered important as part of the East-West Economic Corridor concept, holding the potential to contribute to the expansion of logistics networks with neighboring countries in the future. Detailed routes and construction timelines are expected to be finalized after procedures such as environmental impact assessments and land acquisition.
