Thai Northern New Railway Line 70% Complete, Tha Ngon Tunnel to Pierce Through in 2026

Thailand's State Railway (SRT) has confirmed the progress of the new railway line from Den Chai (Phrae Province) to Chiang Khong (Chiang Rai Province), a significant infrastructure project in northern Thailand. The line has currently reached approximately 70% completion. A key component of this project is the Tha Ngon (Ngao) Tunnel, which is set to become the longest tunnel in Thailand. The SRT has indicated that the construction of this tunnel is projected to be pierced through within 2026. The Den Chai-Chiang Khong railway line is anticipated to significantly boost logistics and tourism in northern Thailand. It is expected to facilitate border trade with Laos and China, and improve access to tourist attractions in the northern region. This line is also positioned as part of the national strategy to stimulate the domestic economy and reduce regional disparities, in conjunction with Thailand's Eastern Economic Corridor (EEC) initiative.
