Over 20,000 Displaced in Cambodia Despite Thailand Ceasefire: Interior Ministry

PHNOM PENH, July 20, 2026 (KPT) – More than 20,000 people remain displaced in Cambodia despite a ceasefire with Thailand, the government said Saturday, accusing Thai forces of continuing to occupy and damage villages along the disputed border. The Ministry of Interior reported that 20,281 people, including 10,331 women and 6,066 children, had not been able to return home during the 24‑hour period from July 18 to 19. It said the displaced were among more than 640,000 people affected by the border conflict, alleging Thai troops continued to occupy and destroy villages after the ceasefire took effect. Thailand has previously rejected similar claims. According to the ministry, schools and health facilities in several provinces remain closed. Eight schools and five hospitals or health centres in Oddar Meanchey, five schools and one hospital in Banteay Meanchey, and seven schools and two hospitals in Preah Vihear were still shut. Damage to public and private property was also reported. Government spokesperson Pen Bona reiterated last week that Cambodia’s position is rooted in Franco‑Siamese treaties and the principle of uti possidetis juris, rejecting any attempt to alter recognised borders by force. The defence ministry urged the Joint Boundary Commission to resume survey and demarcation work, citing bilateral agreements and a joint statement issued in December 2025. It also called for careful verification of recent shooting and explosion incidents, stricter discipline among frontline forces, and cooperation to curb misinformation that could inflame public hostility.
