Thailand's Deregulation Push Collides with Patronage-Based Governance

Thailand's government is facing challenges in its push for deregulation, as the initiatives clash with the deeply entrenched patronage-based governance system. This long-standing political practice hinders the implementation of reforms aimed at liberalizing economic activities and promoting growth. Patronage-based governance refers to a system where specific individuals or groups exert political and economic influence in exchange for favors or support. In Thailand, this structure has permeated bureaucratic and business circles, acting as a barrier to achieving the original goals of deregulation, such as establishing a fair competitive environment and encouraging new market entrants. While Vietnam, under its one-party system, pursues centralized economic policies, it has also been implementing certain deregulatory measures and improving its business environment to attract foreign investment. However, in a context different from Thailand's patronage politics, Vietnam also faces the potential for vested interests to maintain their privileges through politically influential groups and opaque decision-making processes, which could become bottlenecks for economic development. Thailand's experience highlights the critical importance of political and social structural reforms, not just deregulation, in the pursuit of economic growth. Vietnam, too, is expected to confront challenges in ensuring transparency and a fair competitive environment for sustainable economic growth, albeit in a different form than Thailand.
