Vietnam Explores Cooperation to Enhance ASEAN Food Security

Vietnam is exploring expanded cooperation in agriculture with neighboring countries to strengthen food security within the ASEAN bloc. This initiative aims to stabilize regional supply chains and address challenges posed by climate change and geopolitical risks. Vietnam is increasing its imports from Singapore and Malaysia, while existing suppliers are also striving to maintain exports despite tightening supply conditions. In this context, Vietnam's deepening of agricultural cooperation within ASEAN is seen as contributing to food supply stability. Malaysia and Indonesia have both expressed a desire to enhance agricultural cooperation. The Malaysian Prime Minister discussed with Cambodia the swift establishment of an ASEAN Observer Team and the operation of an Interim Monitoring Team to monitor the ceasefire. Meanwhile, Indonesia is advancing the development of an EV battery ecosystem leveraging its nickel reserves and measures to stabilize prices for bioethanol feedstocks. Furthermore, Indonesia aims to increase bilateral trade with Thailand to $20 billion by 2030 under an expanded strategic partnership covering economic, energy, and agricultural sectors. These developments suggest Vietnam's approach to strengthening food security is not solely reliant on its own production but also on reinforcing regional cooperation within the ASEAN framework. Under its one-party system, Vietnam has achieved economic growth, but it appears to recognize the importance of regional collaboration in the agricultural sector, which is vulnerable to global uncertainties and climate change. Southeast Asia, in particular, is home to the largest number of children globally, with ASEAN alone recording approximately 200 million people under the age of 18. Ensuring a stable food supply is crucial to support this young population, and regional cooperation forms the foundation for this. Vietnam is intensifying its strategic efforts to transform its industrial sector from a labor-intensive production model towards one driven by skilled workers and advanced technologies.
