Safety Lapses During Highway Breakdowns Prompt Fatal Accident Warning

The danger of inadequate safety measures during vehicle breakdowns on Vietnam's expressways is being highlighted following a serious incident. On the night of July 6, a collision between two trucks at Km153+100 on the Vinh Hao-Phan Thiet expressway resulted in one fatality and one injury. Initial investigations by authorities indicate that one contributing factor to the accident was the broken-down truck only placing a warning object (in this case, a paint can) approximately 50 meters behind the vehicle, significantly short of the regulated distance. Expressway regulations mandate that warning devices be placed at a minimum distance of 150 meters behind a stalled vehicle to provide sufficient time for approaching vehicles to notice, slow down, and change lanes safely. For vehicles traveling at speeds up to 120 km/h, a 50-meter distance is equivalent to just over one second of travel, which is critically short for drivers to perceive the hazard and take evasive action, especially in conditions of limited visibility at night. While the driver of the following vehicle is also being investigated for potential inattention, the short warning distance is considered a primary cause of the fatal outcome. Many serious accidents on expressways stem not only from the vehicle breakdown itself but also from insufficient or improper warnings. When warnings are placed too close, their cautionary purpose is effectively nullified. The Vietnamese traffic police strongly advise drivers whose vehicles break down on expressways to move to the emergency lane or a safe location if possible, turn on hazard lights, place warning devices at the legally required minimum distance of 150 meters behind the vehicle, and ensure all occupants evacuate to a safe area outside the guardrail before contacting authorities for assistance. Under Vietnam's one-party system, infrastructure development and the enforcement of traffic safety regulations are key national priorities. As the country expands its expressway network to accommodate increasing traffic volumes driven by economic growth, such accidents underscore the critical need for widespread awareness and strict adherence to legal requirements to ensure citizens can safely benefit from economic progress.
