Nearly Half of Filipinos Expect Improved Living Conditions in Next 12 Months

Optimism regarding living conditions is on the rise among Filipinos, according to a recent survey by Social Weather Stations (SWS). The second-quarter 2023 poll, conducted in June, found that 48% of adult respondents expect their personal situation to improve over the next 12 months, a significant 10-percentage-point increase from 38% in March. The survey also indicated that 31% anticipate their living standards will remain the same, while 8% foresee a worsening situation, and 12% did not provide an answer. This resulted in a Net Personal Optimism score of +40, which SWS classified as "excellent." This marks a 17-point jump from the +23 recorded in March and is the highest score since June 2025. Sentiment improved across various regions, with Balance Luzon seeing a 27-point surge to +49. Metro Manila's optimism rose to +36, the Visayas to +33, and Mindanao to +31. Optimism also increased in both rural (+41) and urban (+39) areas, as well as among women (+43) and men (+38). Notably, youth aged 18 to 24 reported the highest level of optimism at +58. When comparing current living standards to a year ago, however, the outlook was more balanced. Thirty-three percent felt better off, 34% saw no change, and 33% reported worse conditions. The survey was conducted through face-to-face interviews from June 20 to 29, with a national margin of error of ±3% and ±6% for major areas. The rising public optimism can be partly attributed to easing inflation pressures and a resilient domestic economy, supported by strong consumer spending. The government's economic stimulus measures and efforts to attract foreign investment may also be contributing to a more positive outlook. However, potential risks such as renewed inflation spikes and global economic uncertainties remain factors that could influence future sentiment.
