Copyright Law Revision: Scrutiny on Impact to Media, Industry, and Public

In Indonesia, movements towards the revision of the Copyright Law (UU Hak Cipta) are gaining attention. Amidst this revision process, a key issue being raised is ensuring that the rights and interests of the media, related industries, and the general public are not compromised, while referencing examples from other countries. There are indications that the current copyright law is not fully capable of responding to the advancements in digitalization and new forms of content distribution, leading to discussions about the necessity of revision. However, as the draft revisions materialize, it is essential to examine from multiple perspectives how their content will affect the business activities of the media industry, the rights of creators and content producers, and even the access of general consumers to content. In particular, careful deliberation is necessary to ascertain whether the law revision might excessively restrict the reporting activities of the media and the freedom of content creation, or hinder innovation within the industry. Furthermore, the balance with the public's right to easily access culture and information must also be considered. The government is expected to aim for a fair and effective law revision by referencing domestic and international best practices, following sufficient consultation with stakeholders.
