Landslide kills four family members in Monghsu Township as heavy monsoon rains batter Shan State

The bodies of four people, all members of a family, were recovered from their home after a landslide in Monghsu Township, southern Shan State, on Wednesday. Monghsu is located 180 miles (300 km) northeast of the Shan State capital Taunggyi. “The landslide occurred following days of heavy rain,” a Monghsu resident told DVB. The landslide buried two homes, according to residents. Heavy rain in Monghsu since Sept. 1 has caused soil erosion along nearby hills, sending mud and debris crashing into residential properties. While floodwaters have begun affecting urban wards, no additional casualties have been reported in the immediate area. Monsoon rains have continued to cause flooding and landslides across Myanmar since July, with recent floods in Sagaing Region’s Kale Township causing five fatalities and thousands more displaced.
