Cambodia Cracks Down on Online Gambling, Orders Closure by September 2026

Authorities in Kandal province, Cambodia, have officially instructed the Diamond Stone Casino to cease its online betting operations by the end of September 2026. This directive is part of the Cambodian government's intensified efforts to eradicate illegal gambling, particularly unlicensed or technically non-compliant online betting activities. During a meeting held on September 7, 2026, Kandal Provincial Deputy Governor Hak Sokmakkara clearly communicated the government's order to relevant departments, prosecutors, and representatives from involved agencies. He emphasized that strict legal action will be taken against casino owners or managers who continue to operate online betting secretly, ignoring the authorities' instructions and the set deadline. The Cambodian government does not permit online betting businesses, thus requiring the Diamond Stone Casino to terminate these activities by the end of September 2026. From October 1 onwards, provincial authorities, in cooperation with relevant agencies and law enforcement, will conduct thorough inspections of casino business operations within the province to ensure compliance. This move signifies Cambodia's firm stance on strengthening its gambling regulations and cracking down on illegal activities, especially those conducted via the internet. In recent years, issues related to online gambling have been raised in Cambodia, with the government aiming to maintain public order and social stability.
