A column of the junta forces, numbering nearly 500 troops, originating from Pakokku Division 101, entered Hpaungseik Township on June 30, passing through villages in Myayng and Pakokku townships, according to a statement released yesterday (July 2) by the Hpaungseik Township Social Welfare, Labour and Humanitarian Affairs Department. The junta has been blocking the transport of goods in the area west of Pakokku, including Hpaungseik Township, since May, causing difficulties for the displaced in purchasing food supplies, a responsible person from the Hpaungseik Township Humanitarian Affairs Department told Mizzima. “As there are many displaced people in this area, we are mainly focusing on the military columns in the direction of Kama and Myitche. Since those routes are also heavily used by displaced people, there is no flow of goods for cooking in this area, so we have sufficient rice. However, we are facing considerable difficulties with cooking ingredients,” the official said. Therefore, the Hpaungseik Township Humanitarian Affairs Department issued a statement yesterday (July 2) appealing for assistance with food and cooking ingredients for the displaced, urging coordination with local community leaders. Currently, displaced people in Hpaungseik Township require not only food but also shelter and medicine, according to Anya Myay Civil Society Organization – Myayng. “They are staying in places that are convenient, such as under trees. The main needs are shelter and food. These are the most urgent needs. They also need shelter. Since they fled in an emergency, they could not bring enough food,” said a responsible person from Anya Myay Civil Society Organization – Myayng. It is known that the junta column conducting operations in Hpaungseik Township arrived at Nyaung Yae village early yesterday morning (July 2) and spent the night there. Anya Myay Civil Society Organization – Myayng has stated that this column is responsible for arson, destruction, and killings in Myitche town, Pakokku Township, and for killing more than six civilians, including a mentally disabled man, in Myayng Township. Due to these military operations, the National Unity Government (NUG) and interim education schools in the entire southern part of Myayng Township and Hpaungseik Township have also been forced to close.
