Chonburi Province Unveils Results in Crackdown on Nominee Businesses

Chonburi Province authorities in eastern Thailand have announced significant achievements in their crackdown on illicit foreign capital operations, commonly known as "nominee businesses." These operations involve foreign entities using Thai citizens' names to disguise their actual control and circumvent regulations on foreign ownership and business activities within Thailand. During the recent investigation, 14,264 foreign-funded business entities were meticulously examined. As a result, 39 cases were identified as belonging to a "high-risk group," requiring heightened scrutiny due to suspicions of illegal financial flows and regulatory violations. Furthermore, authorities plan to expand their investigation, focusing on accountants believed to be deeply involved in these illicit activities. These accountants are implicated in connections with as many as 341 companies, suggesting they may hold crucial insights into the full scope of the fraudulent schemes. Chonburi Province is a region with numerous industrial estates and popular tourist destinations, making it an area with active foreign investment. However, this also makes it susceptible to becoming a breeding ground for such malpractices. The current crackdown demonstrates the authorities' strong commitment to fostering the healthy development of the Thai economy and maintaining a fair competitive environment. Moving forward, the authorities intend to conduct detailed investigations into the identified risk groups and associated accountants, taking legal action as necessary.
