Cambodia Officially Establishes Sambo Federation Amid Strong Russia Ties

Phnom Penh, Cambodia – The Sambo Federation of Cambodia was officially established on June 1, 2026, at the headquarters of the National Olympic Committee of Cambodia (NOCC). The federation comprises 13 executive members, with Dr. Thong Khon, who also serves as President of the NOCC, appointed as its president. The first mandate general assembly (2026-2030) for the newly formed federation was attended by distinguished guests including Mr. Suresh Gopi, Secretary General of the Sambo Union of Asia and Oceania (SUAO) and representative of the International Sambo Federation (FIAS), Mr. Sergey Novoseltslev, First Secretary of the Russian Embassy in Cambodia, and Mr. Vath Chamroeun, Secretary of State of the Ministry of Education, Youth and Sport and Secretary General of the NOCC. Dr. Thong Khon stated that the establishment of the Sambo Federation of Cambodia aligns with the Memorandum of Understanding signed between the NOCC and the Russian Olympic Committee concerning cooperation in the development of sports and the Olympic movement, particularly in light of the strong 70-year relationship between Cambodia and Russia. He further explained that following two working meetings with Mr. Suresh Gopi and Mr. Maxim, representatives of the International Sambo Federation, to organize the leadership structure and fulfill various requirements in accordance with the International Sambo Federation's statutes and the principles of the Ministry of Education, Youth and Sport and the Cambodian Olympic movement, the official establishment of the national federation was propelled. Sambo, a combat sport and self-defense art, was officially founded in Russia in 1938. It is led by FIAS and was recognized by the International Olympic Committee (IOC) in 2021. Subsequently, the sport received support from the Olympic Council of Asia (OCA) and has been included in numerous Asian events such as the Asian Beach Games, Asian Indoor and Martial Arts Games, and Asian Youth Games. The OCA is also preparing to include Sambo in the 2029 Asian Youth Games in Uzbekistan, and Cambodia aims to host the sport in the 2031 Asian Youth Games. He expressed confidence that international federations will continue to support Cambodia in developing the skills of athletes, training technical officials, and providing technical equipment to drive development towards upcoming competitions. It is noteworthy that the Sambo Federation of Cambodia was unanimously approved as a provisional member by the SUAO General Assembly held in the Philippines on June 25. Cambodia will proceed with the procedures to apply for full membership by organizing the first mandate general assembly to fulfill the requirements for recognition by the Ministry of Education, Youth and Sport, NOCC, and FIAS. The executive members for the first mandate of the federation, besides President Dr. Thong Khon, include Vice Presidents Mr. Vath Chamroeun, Mr. Ouk Sithicheat, Mr. Chea Bora, Mr. Va Sinthiroumy, Mr. Mam Ra, and Mr. Seng Bunson.
