Cambodian Journalists Train for Violent Demonstrations in Turkey

Twenty-five Cambodian and international journalists underwent rigorous practical training in Ankara, Turkey, on Wednesday to master personal safety techniques during violent demonstrations and conflict zones. The hands-on exercise, part of the 30th "War Journalism" training programme, focused on self-defence and survival strategies when encountering smoke bombs, tear gas, and high-pressure water cannons. Rather than relying solely on classroom theory, the session required participants to experience simulated field threats firsthand. Reporters were trained to operate gas masks, analyse wind direction to safely evade toxic fumes, and execute battlefield first aid. Trainees also practiced maintaining physical balance and securing rapid shelter against high-pressure water jets to prevent blunt force injuries. Participants noted that facing simulated extreme conditions provided crucial practical experience, helping reduce panic and enhance rapid decision-making skills when reporting from violent protests or active combat zones. Organisers reported that the session concluded successfully, equipping reporters with vital safety protocols to ensure they can deliver news from dangerous environments while prioritising their personal survival.
